South of Butte, a resident who failed to heed an evacuation order was taken away by ambulance after suffering second-degree burns to his hands and arms, said Forest Service spokeswoman Mariah Leuschen.
That blaze, the 19 Mile Fire, has burned more than 6 square miles and at least nine structures, including two houses. Officials warned the toll will likely rise.
Billings Gazette: Pine Creek fire continues to grow, at least 5 homes lost
The fire broke out on private land at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Driven by gusts of as much as 40 mph, it quickly exploded. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Karen Tuscano, a U.S. Forest Service public information officer, said the fire grew to about 12,000 acres from about 5,000 Thursday.
