***As an update to the below post- thanks to a reader, I spoke with Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder and he said the CSPOA has never contacted him or replied to his phone calls or emails. Sheriff Linder says he is not sure why he is on their list.  He added that a couple other Sheriffs on the list from Montana were also unsure of why they made the list.

If you caught this post, which made The Drudge Report over the weekend, you may be wondering- who from Montana is on the list?

From the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association: Growing List of Sheriffs, Associations and Police Chiefs Saying ‘NO’ to Obama Gun Control

The following sheriffs, state sheriff’s associations, and police chiefs have vowed to uphold and defend the Constitution against Obama’s unconstitutional gun control measures.  We applaud these public servants for their courage and conviction.

The remarkable thing about what these brave men and women are doing is that nobody told them to do it.  Neither the CSPOA nor any other organization that we are aware of contacted sheriffs across the nation and asked them to make statements; this is something sheriffs did on their own, or because their constituents requested it of them.

The Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is listed as providing a statement.  Here’s an excerpt from a statement that was featured on their website.   (It should be noted that the letter also says that no law affecting the right to keep and bear arms has been introduced)

As our state and country continue to discuss and debate gun control legislation, the position of our association remains steadfast: the MSPOA will not waver in our defense of the Constitution and will stand to preserve our constituents’ right to possess firearms and the protections insured by the other nine amendments contained in the Bill of Rights.

The MSPOA feels that any legislation that takes away constitutional protections, including gun rights, from law-abiding citizens will not alleviate or eliminate the threat from violent or mentally ill individuals. In fact, it would expose our law-abiding neighbors to violence with fewer resources to counter them with.

As for individual Sheriff’s that the CSPOA says have signed the pledge, here’s the list they are touting:

  MT Cascade Bob Edwards
  MT Lake Jay Doyle
MT Lewis and Clark Leo Dutton
  MT Musselshell Woodrow Weitzeil
  MT Powell Scott F. Howard
  MT Ravalli Chris Hoffman
  MT Sanders Tom Rummel
  MT Wibaux Darby Harrington
  MT Yellowstone Mike Linder

I applaud each of these public servants for their courage and conviction in taking stand to protect our rights! This renews my faith in our Montana Sheriffs. I sincerely hope all Montana LEO’s will follow the Sheriff’s example. Semper Fi!
